I think in many ways City of Angels is very different to the original Penny Dreadful. I’d say that Alex was my personal favourite of the three forms, Dormer’s squinting behind the glasses and hunched over back were the perfect devil on the shoulder to Councilman Townsend (Michael Gladis). Dormer portrayed each form perfectly and I loved how the three were all so different from each other- some really great acting. Each of the three personalities got close to someone with the potential to cause uproar and slowly whispered in their ears until the damage had been done. I really enjoyed Natalie Dormer as Magda and her various forms and thought it really was some perfect casting- I mean who better than Dormer to play an evil demon? I loved the idea of a demon having these different forms, using her influence to create chaos on Earth.
PENNY DREADFUL REVIEW SERIES
The series had some great ideas and great storylines but there were also some parts which just did not work. I remember certian moments of the original Penny Dreadful were I did have to push myself to keep watching, especially towards the end- and it’s kind of the same here. Like the original show, there were some really interesting characters and storylines but at the same time there were aspects of the show that fell a bit flat. Penny Dreadful was definitely a show with its high and low points and I think the same could be said here. I was a fan of the original Penny Dreadful and so was excited by the idea of this spinoff. The series was a fun spinoff to the original show and an interesting look into the social context of 1930s Los Angeles. I enjoyed each character’s storyline- admittedly some more than others- and liked how the storylines all meshed together. The premise of Magda attempting to prove mankind’s darkness by attempting to envoke a war was exciting and I loved how each episode was built up, with the racial and social tensions getting worse and worse. I really enjoyed Penny Dreadful: City of Angels and loved the initial idea to it. Can Tiago keep his role as peace-keeper or will Magda be proved right and set off an all out war? Tiago and Lewis soon become deeply embroiled in LA’s complex history as well as the looming threat of war, and Nazi conspiracies at every turn. On his first day Tiago is tasked with a gruesome murder which threatens to ignite the racial tensions already brewing in Los Angeles.

To prove her point Magda takes on the form of three humans- German housewife Elsa, Political aide Alex and gang member Rio- in oder to influence those with the greatest potential to start a war.ĭuring all of Magda’s planning, Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) takes up his place as the first Mexican detective in the LAPD, partened up with Officer Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane)– who was the only one who would take Vega. Penny Dreadful: City of Angels follows Magda (Natalie Dormer, In Darkness), a demon who wants to prove to her deity sister Santa Muerte (Lorenza Izzo) that all humans are all inherently evil.
