Now QUICKLY, before the shaft fills with water, send Urist down the stairs to link the lever with the 1x1 bridge.To control the flow, build a lever at the top of the shaft and then build 1x1 retracting bridge on the bottom of the open shaft. The rate of irrigation will depend on how many aquifer tiles you had to channel through. This will result in irrigation via constantly falling water.At the bottom you should have an "up stairs" tile next to an open hole that leads below. Directly above the center of your shroom pit, channel an open 1x1 shaft and carve a 1x1 staircase next to it.

The Wiki article on irrigation suggests several ways for getting mud on your cavern floor. This makes sense because all the mushroom species in the game naturally occur in underground caverns. There's a little warning message about this when you build a farm plot in surface soil.
